Background:

Many developing countries today face a youth leadership crisis. Ghana is no exception. Many young people look up to political leadership for direction and development. The fact remains however, that political leadership can only go so far. Without a strong cadre of youth leaders—in business, academia, science, industry and every imaginable field—there can be little if any development.

In Ghana today, there is a huge youth leadership vacuum which is yet to be filled fully. While many youth are genuinely well intentioned, there are few platforms for tangible manifestation of their initiatives or vision. The talent for leadership abounds in Ghana 's youth but the support is lacking.

Out of frustration, many flee their beloved country in search of a better life for themselves and their immediate family, leaving the hard task of nation building for others to continue. You may know this phenomenon as brain drain. Another example of youth leadership vacuum exists with diaspora Ghanaian youth. This vast wealth of human capital is neither mobilized nor deployed in any significant way either for nonprofit or proprietary work in Ghana .

Faced with these and other leadership and development challenges, the Ghana Youth Leadership Alliance—a nonprofit NGO registered in Ghana—was formed with the modest goals of networking Ghana's youth, reviving their passion for leadership and providing tangible opportunities for them to serve their motherland and help in her development.

History and Legal Status:

The Ghana Youth Leadership alliance was formed in 2006 by a group of ten Ghanaian students in top colleges in the USA out of a desire to contribute their widow's mite to their nation's development. It was founded with initial financial contributions from members and generous donors. The organization is a non-governmental, nonprofit, nonreligious and nonpolitical group whose sole aim is to assist in Ghana 's development. Founding members were from different ethnicities, creeds and affiliations.

It is registered in Ghana as an NGO and will hopefully secure US 501 (c) 3 status in the United States in the future.
